This coat is one of a kind and made by recycling and patching an old quilt from the 1940s. It has an a-line silhouette, wide sleeves and patch pockets. The original quilt edge is used to create a scalloped hem and edging on the front. There is a loop at the top of the collar and buttons down the front. There are slits on the side. The quilt is very soft from wear and the delicate fabrics used and it's warm from the wool batting inside. It has a lot of history and 3 generations of patching.
The quilt was originally made with hexagon pieces of dress fabrics such as silk, rayon and velvet and has a wool batting and a light pink backing (it may be a silk-cotton blend, I'm not sure) and was pieced and quilted by hand. There are many green striped cotton hexagon pieces which are patched on top of the original quilt and have been machine sewn. These are repairs which have been done years after the quilt was made. When I found the quilt it had many more damaged silk hexagons and I patched them up using a variety of vintage scraps including 1940s ties, silk and velvet which I hand dyed. I applied these mostly by machine. You will also see machine and hand mending. There is some staining on the lining.
The coat remains delicate and some of the silks are fragile. It should only be dry cleaned when necessary.
